Official Release: Teddy Higuera Voted Onto Walk of Fame

TeddyHiguera

The Milwaukee Brewers today announced that pitcher Teddy Higuera will be honored this season as he has been voted as the newest member of the Miller Park Walk of Fame.  A total of 32 votes were cast and Higuera received 25 votes (78.1%), exceeding the threshold of 65% needed for election.

Higuera fell just two votes shy of election last year.

A lifetime Brewer, Higuera played nine seasons with the team.  He started his career in 1985 and went 15-8 with a 3.90 ERA with 127 strikeouts, while finishing as the American League runner-up for Rookie of the Year. The following season, Higuera posted a 20 win season, going 20-11 with a 2.79 ERA, with 207 strikeouts and 17 complete games.  He earned All-Star honors and finished second on the Cy Young Award ballot.  Higuera followed his success by setting the franchise record for strikeouts in a season with 240 in 1987, as he went 18-10 with a 3.85 ERA.  He went 94-64 with 3.61 ERA in his career, and currently ranks third among franchise leaders in career wins and strikeouts (1,081).

“We are thrilled to honor Teddy Higuera with a plaque on the Miller Park Walk of Fame,” said Brewers Chief Operating Officer Rick Schlesinger. “Teddy was a lifetime Brewer, and he still ranks among franchise leaders in many pitching statistics. Just as important, though, is that he’s always been an engaging personality and a terrific representative of those who have worn the Brewers uniform. We look forward to his return to Milwaukee and the opportunity to recognize his achievements with a permanent marker at Miller Park.”

Higuera will travel to Milwaukee and be recognized for the honor in a pre-game ceremony on Friday, August 14 as the Brewers face the Phillies at 7:10 pm.

Joe Adcock (20 votes) and Mike Caldwell (17) were the closest to qualifying among eligible former players and coaches.

There were a total of 29 Brewers players and seven Braves players on the ballot. The ballots included on-field personnel who wore a Brewers or Braves uniform for a minimum of three seasons but have been retired from playing/managing roles for at least three seasons. All players and managers receiving votes on at least 5% of the ballots will remain eligible in 2016.

Past inductees include Hank Aaron, Rollie Fingers, Paul Molitor, Robin Yount in 2001; Commissioner Bud Selig and Cecil Cooper in 2002; Bob Uecker and Harry Dalton in 2003; Jim Gantner and Gorman Thomas in 2004; Don Money and Harvey Kuenn in 2005; Eddie Mathews, Warren Spahn and John Quinn in 2007 (the first year that former Braves players appeared on the ballot); Lew Burdette in 2010 and Johnny Logan in 2013.

Each inductee is honored with a granite plaque that is placed into the terrace area walkway that surrounds Miller Park.

Brewers Wall of Honor Unveiled Today

The Milwaukee Brewers will formally unveil the “Brewers Wall of Honor” at Miller Park today.  The Wall of Honor will commemorate Milwaukee Brewers players that meet a set criteria based on service to the club. A total of 36 former Brewers players will attend today’s ceremony, marking the largest single gathering of Brewers alumni in team history, surpassing the 31 players who came in for the final game at County Stadium in 2000.

A private ceremony for inductees, their families and special guests will take place at 4 p.m. and the wall will be available for viewing to the general public beginning at 6:35 p.m. A pregame ceremony honoring the inductees will take place on the field prior to the game.

The Wall of Honor will be a permanent display outside of Miller Park on a wall on the North side of the ballpark.  Players on the Wall of Honor will each have a plaque with their photo and a brief synopsis of their playing career.  The plaques are designed by Matthews International, designers of the plaques for the National Baseball Hall of Fame as well as the plaques on the Milwaukee Braves Wall of Honor at Miller Park.

Players who meet any of the following criteria while wearing a Brewers uniform will be inducted into the Wall of Honor:

  • 2,000 or more plate appearances
  • 1,000 or more innings pitched
  • 250 appearances as a pitcher
  • Winner of a major award (MVP, Cy Young, Rookie of the Year, or Fireman of the Year)
  • Manager of a pennant-winning team
  • Individuals recognized with a statue on the Miller Park Plaza
  • Members of the National Baseball Hall of Fame who have played for the Brewers

Currently, there are 58 persons who meet the above criteria and will be recognized on the Brewers Wall during the 2014 season.  In addition to the 58 members of the inaugural class, there are seven active players in Major League Baseball that meet the criteria.  Upon retirement, players who meet the criteria will be added to the Wall of Honor.

A total of 38 honorees are scheduled to attend the event six honorees will be represented by family members. The complete list of players who will grace the Brewers Wall of Honor at the unveiling ceremony today is as follows (attendees subject to change, those who will be present for the event are in BOLD, those who will be represented by a family member at the event are in ITALICS and those not able to attend the event are in PLAIN text):

Walk of Fame Voting Results, Brewers Have First Shutout of Year

Teddy Higuera and Joe Adcock Both Narrowly Miss Election

Official Release:

The Milwaukee Brewers announced today that there will not be an inductee to the Brewers Walk of Fame at Miller Park.  A total of 40 votes were received and no candidates received the 26 votes necessary (65%) for election.  Teddy Higuera (24 votes, 60%) and Joe Adcock (21 votes, 52.5%) were the closest to election.

Four former Brewers did not receive the necessary two votes to remain on the 2015 ballot.  There were a total of 26 Brewers players and seven Braves players on the ballot. The ballots included on-field personnel who wore a Brewers or Braves uniform for a minimum of three seasons but have been retired from playing/managing roles for at least three seasons. All players and managers receiving votes on at least 5% of the ballots will remain eligible in 2015.

Opinion Poll: Who Should Start for the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday?

After a mild winter, the experts claimed that Wisconsin would see an increase in the number of insects that nobody likes this summer. Mosquitos, black flies, those annoying orange lady bugs. What the experts didn’t tell us in Milwaukee was that the injury bug would be the most prevalent before the calendar even turned to June.

The Brewers have now lost three starters (Chris Narveson, Mat Gamel, Alex Gonzalez) to injuries that, barring a quick recovery by the two surgically-repaired ACLs, will cost them the balance of the 2012 season. They’ve lost games by other players both on the Disabled List but already back (Carlos Gomez), not to the DL but just missed a few games (Rickie Weeks, Ryan Braun, and maybe Aramis Ramirez after getting drilled in the elbow last night), and finally two more players that have gone down to the DL over the past two games (Cesar Izturis, Marco Estrada) that were filling in for guys lost for the year.

The shortstop position has been a mess. The team claimed 36-year-old Cody Ransom off of waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks to replace Edwin Maysonet on the roster, but after Izturis’ hamstring injury Maysonet is coming back up to, presumably, backup Ransom now. There really isn’t much more that General Manager Doug Melvin can do about the shortstop position right now.

What he does have some options at, however, is what this post is here to discuss.

Melvin announced through the media that he expected recently-injured starting pitcher Marco Estrada to miss “three or four starts”. The diagnosis since then is that Estrada could miss “4-6 weeks” which of course is a lot more than four starts.

Given that Melvin has options, I took to social media and asked who my followers and friends would like to see fill Estrada’s void. This was asked when we were under the assumption of “three to four starts”, but I’m not sure that Estrada being out longer would affect the answers much.

Here now are the answers, ordered by the number of mentions the player received:

Total Votes: 51

Manny Parra: 13
Wily Peralta: 9
Tyler Thornburg: 8
Roy Oswalt: 7
Anyone but Manny Parra: 4
Michael Fiers: 3
(the rest of the list is presented alphabetically by last name since they’re all tied with 1 vote)
Brian Baker
Chorizo
Teddy Higuera
Brooks Kieschnick
Jonathan Lucroy (with George Kottaras catching)
Jason Marquis
Kevin Millwood (via trade)

Obviously some people went for a humorous response (Higuera, Chorizo, Kieschnick), and I’m sorry to inform seven of you that Roy Oswalt isn’t coming to a team in the Brewers current state (record and otherwise).

The beat writers seem to think that Ron Roenicke is backing off of Manny Parra as an option, and that Parra will likely remain in the bullpen, but he got the most votes here. Also, assistant GM Gord Ash made comments that while Thornburg is “in the discussion”, his likelihood of getting chosen is low because he’s not on the 40-man roster already and that must be a consideration.

But, seeing the list here, do you agree? Who would you vote for if you haven’t already?

Or is this the guy you want on the mound on Tuesday?
