MLB Network’s “Top 10 Right Now” Rankings Entering 2016

Each year I compile MLB Network’s “Top 100 Players Right Now” which airs annually before the regular season begins.

Beginning in 2014, I decided to supplement those rankings by giving you a place to find all of the Top 10 Right Now positional rankings as well. I continued that last year with the 2015 rankings.

I’ll add to this post as the episodes air on MLB Network over the next few weeks.

On Thursday, January 14, 2016, the rankings for both Centerfielders and Shortstops were revealed. With January 21st came First Basemen and Starting Pitchers. On January 28th we’ll get Third Basemen and Left Fielders. February 4th and February 11th will reveal the remaining positions of Second Baseman, Right Fielders, Catchers, and Relief Pitchers.

There were five Brewers among the 100 names listed by The Shredder in 2014. They were: Carlos Gomez (CF, 6th), Jean Segura (SS, 5th), Ryan Braun (RF, 2nd), Aramis Ramirez (3B, 7th), and Jonathan Lucroy (C, 6th).

Which Brewers will be ranked by The Shredder heading in 2015? Turns out fans in Milwaukee get three this year. Carlos Gomez (CF, 4th), Scooter Gennett (2B, 10th), and Jonathan Lucroy (C, 2nd).

Brewers Will Send Taylor, Ramirez, others to 2014 Arizona Fall League

30 groups of prospects, six teams, ~5.5 weeks. This is the Arizona Fall League.

As a premier showcase for talent on the cusp of breaking through to the upper levels of the minors and ultimately The Show, the Arizona Fall League plays host to some of baseball’s best and brightest of who you’ve likely never heard. This year the AFL runs from October 7 through the league championship game on November 15. The annual All-Star Game, appropriately dubbed the “Fall Stars Game” will be held on November 1.

Brewers prospects will be a part of a different, yet somewhat familiar, team this year. After competing last year as a part of the Saguaros of Surprise, the Brewers will be returning to the monicker under which they played in 2012, that of the Desert Dogs. In 2012, the Desert Dogs were referred to as the Phoenix Desert Dogs. In 2014, however, they’re known as the Glendale Desert Dogs. They play their home games at Camelback Ranch, which is the Spring Training home of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago White Sox.

Farmhands from the Dodgers, White Sox, Baltimore Orioles and Detroit Tigers will work alongside those of the Brewers as members of the Desert Dogs.

The Brewers originally were set to send six players to Surprise in 2013. They were pitchers David Goforth, Taylor Jungmann, and Kevin Shackelford, infielder Jason Rogers, outfielder Mitch Haniger, and catcher Adam Weisenburger. For 2014, Milwaukee will be sending ### players (and pitching coach Chris Hook) to Glendale. By position, here are those players and some supplemental information:

MLB Network’s Top 100 Players Right Now Entering 2014

As I did last year, and the year before, I’ll be keeping a running list of the Top 100 Players Right Now as they are revealed on MLB Network, eventually compiling the entire list.

They will have revealed all 100 by the end of Friday, February 21st. I’ll update this same space as they reveal the remaining entries.

As always, I will understandably highlight the Brewers players on the list. There were six Brewers on the list entering 2012. Rickie Weeks was 83, John Axford was 77, Yovani Gallardo was 72, Aramis Ramirez was 66, Zack Greinke was 64, and Ryan Braun was too low at number 9. Last year, the Brewers only had three players featured on the list (at the time it was revealed). Yovani Gallardo repeated his position at 72, Aramis Ramirez jumped all the way up to 32, and Braun settled in at 6. Kyle Lohse made last year’s list as well.

My early prediction? The Brewers could have six (6) this year (Braun, Ramirez, Kyle Lohse, Carlos Gomez, Jean Segura, Jonathan Lucroy) but I think Garza falls short for sure. (UPDATE: Looks like the Brewers will only have three again. Ramirez and Lohse both fall off the list and Lucroy gets no love either.)

MLB Network’s “Top 10 Right Now” Rankings Entering 2014

Each year I compile MLB Network’s “Top 100 Players Right Now” which airs annually before the regular season begins.

This year, I decided to supplement those rankings by giving you a place to find all of the Top 10 Right Now positional rankings as well.

I’ll add to this post as the episodes air on MLB Network over the next few weeks.

On Friday, January 10, 2014 the rankings for both Centerfielders and Shortstops were revealed. (See them below.) On Friday, January 17th both Starting Pitchers and Right Fielders were unveiled. Friday, January 24th brought us Left Fielders and First Basemen. Relief Pitchers and Second Basemen were revealed on Friday, January 31st.

Catchers and Third Basemen will be revealed on Friday, February 7th, so look for a couple more Brewers to make it.

You read that correctly. Mark DeRosa doesn’t Ryan Braun in his Top 10 Right Fielders Right Now despite Brian Kenny and Bill James both ranking Braun #1 and the Shredder ranking him second. DeRosa says Braun “should be 1” but since he has to earn back the respect of fans, his teammates, etc. DeRosa “hopes” he comes back and performs and is #1 next year, but he couldn’t discount other guys.

As for the Shredder, Brian Kenny said he was shocked not only that Braun wasn’t first but that Puig was. I’m guessing Braun was dinged by the Shredder for how many games he missed last year. That’ll happen in an algorithm.

There are five Brewers among the 100 names listed by The Shredder. They are: Carlos Gomez (CF, 6th), Jean Segura (SS, 5th), Ryan Braun (RF, 2nd), Aramis Ramirez (3B, 7th), and Jonathan Lucroy (C, 6th)

Hot Stove Report: Hart Receives Clearance, Could Receive Multiple Offers Soon

Corey Hart has been medically cleared.

What this means for Corey Hart the professional baseball player is that teams can feel more confident than they have up to this point in offering him a contract. What it means for Corey Hart the man is that he’ll have some decisions to make.

A source tells me that in addition to the contract that the Brewers have been preparing to offer on which I reported a month ago, at least four other teams have been working on offers. It doesn’t necessarily mean that he’ll get all of them in his hands but that so many teams are considering him leads me to a thought.

More on that in a moment. First the teams: Blue Jays, Mets, Yankees, and the Orioles.

Nobody is expected to go crazy at this point in what they might offer Hart, but with these teams in the mix along with other destinations that certainly make sense at least on paper, it could be enough that Hart could conceivably turn this into a more lucrative situation than first suggested by yours truly and other smarter folks. That was a low-base, one-year contract with incentives that could turn the contract into slightly below market value.

So here’s what I’m thinking. I wonder if the Brewers will end up needing to offer Hart a one-year contract at relatively the same terms as above but with a vesting option for a second year at full market value that becomes a mutual option should it fail to vest. Something along those lines would likely be able to trump simple one-year offers unless Hart only wants to play 2014 under contract in order to hit full free agency next off-season.

Then again, that assumes that nobody goes two guaranteed years from the jump.

Regardless as to the ultimate offer from Milwaukee to Hart, it appears as though he is the Brewers’ main priority right now. They have made no other moves and although Doug Melvin historically works slowly at this time of year, it’ll be worth watching to see how quickly they might move on the former All-Star now that he’s medically cleared for all baseball activities.

Trade Season Report: Francisco Rodriguez Traded

The Brewers announced just prior to Tuesday night’s first pitch that relief pitcher Francisco Rodriguez had been traded.

Doug Melvin reportedly set today as a deadline for teams to make their best and final offers for the Brewers’ closer. With teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers, Texas Rangers, and Boston Red Sox getting involved in the mix, it was the Baltimore Orioles who stepped up with an offer that Melvin deemed the best.

In exchange for the services of the 31-year-old veteran right-hander, the Brewers received a 21-year-old prospect at third base named Nick Delmonico. Delmonico, who stands 6’2″ tall, was hitting .244/.351/.471 at the time of the trade with 13 home runs and 30 RBI. He bats left-handed which is certainly a plus but more so than anything he joins an organization which is very thin in prospects at the hot corner.

Delmonico was originally listed as a 1B/2B combo defensively after being drafted in the 6th round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft out of Farragut High School in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Here are the notes from MLB.com’s Top Prospects website which had Delmonico ranked as the Orioles 5th best prospect entering 2013.

This Tennessee high school product grew up around the game, with his father, Rod, a longtime college coach and his brother, Tony, having spent time in the Dodgers organization. Nick played all over the infield in high school, and even caught some, but as a pro he’s only seen time on the right side of the infield, with more time spent at first than at second. Some feel his skills are best suited for third. Wherever he plays defensively, it’s his bat that will move him up the ladder. He has the chance to hit for average and at least average power from the left side of the plate. He has an advanced approach and isn’t afraid to take a walk. Delmonico was the South Atlantic League All-Star Game MVP, but his season was cut short because of a knee injury. A full healthy season could enable him to start moving a little more quickly.

(For what it’s worth, Baseball America had Delmonico listed 4th on the list of top Orioles prospects.)

Delmonico is reportedly expected to join the Class-A Advanced Brevard County Manatees of the Florida State League. He had been playing at the Class-A Advanced affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles.

The Milwaukee Brewers have acquired third baseman Nick Delmonico from Baltimore in exchange for right-handed reliever Francisco Rodriguez. The announcement was made by President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Doug Melvin.

Delmonico, 21, was selected by the Orioles in the sixth round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft. He batted .249 with 11 HR and 54 RBI in 95 games last season at Class-A Delmarva, his first professional season. He tied for the team lead in home runs and ranked second on the club in RBI as he was selected to the South Atlantic League mid-season All-Star team. Delmonico, who entered 2013 as the fourth-best prospect in the Orioles organization according to Baseball America, batted .244 with 13 HR and 30 RBI in 60 games at Class-A Frederick this season. His 13 homers led the team.

“We appreciate Francisco’s character and performance as a member of the Brewers,” said Melvin. “In Nick Delmonico, we are getting a young left-handed hitting prospect that we liked as an amateur and have continued to follow and like as a professional. We are happy to add him to the organization.”

Rodriguez, 31, went 1-1 with a 1.09 ERA in 25 games with the Brewers this season, going 10-for-10 in save opportunities. His 304 career saves tie Jeff Montgomery for 21st on the all-time Major League list.

Who Has Asked About Whom, Including Greinke’s Phone Suitor

I don’t know, nor will I come close knowing, all the teams that will inquire about players currently on the Brewers roster.

I will follow along the rumors on the internet as best I can from the people that make money to spend time chasing down leads. I will relay that information to you as quickly as I can.

But from time to time I’ll also hear stuff on my own. I’m here right now to offer some of that.

For example, the Angels have called on Greinke, but they also have talked to Milwaukee about Corey Hart and George Kottaras.

Speaking of the Greek column, Kottaras has also had interest shown in him by the Mets and Indians. Probably others have inquired that I don’t know about, but I do know about them.

Furthermore, the Orioles, Tigers, and Giants have all picked up the phone to check on the availability Hart.

As for the Giants, it was reported that they asked about Francisco Rodriguez but I have a hard time imagining they’re still interested after the Phillies series.

There were rumors that the Yankees might inquire about Aramis Ramirez but as far as as I could find out, that conversation hasn’t taken place. At least not yet.

Zack Greinke, of course, is the hottest chip on the market for Milwaukee right now. He’s been linked to numerous suitors including one who kept Doug Melvin on the phone for “over an hour” trying to come up with creative offers. Nothing pending, at least as of a couple of hours ago, with them though.

What’s that? You want to know who bent the Brewers’ ear that long? Okay fine. It was the White Sox.

Many people don’t feel that they have enough of a system to get a deal done straight up with Milwaukee but they are said to covet Greinke badly. And if there’s one thing Kenny Williams is, it’s creative.
