Brewers Make Eight Day Two Selections
The Milwaukee Brewers made eight selections during the second day of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft today from Rounds 3-10. Milwaukee selected three right-handed pitchers, one left-handed pitcher, one infielder and three outfielders on Day 2.
The Brewers drafted RHP Barrett Astin from the University of Arkansas with their third-round selection (90th overall). He went 4-4 with a 1.79 ERA and one save in 18 games (14 starts) for the Razorbacks this season after spending 2012 as the team’s closer (11 saves in 2012). In 90.2 innings this season, he allowed 85 hits, including just one home run, and struck out 74 batters.
Milwaukee selected RHP Taylor Williams from Kent State University with their fourth-round selection (122 overall). A First Team All-MAC selection in his junior campaign, he led the Golden Flashes with a 10-1 record and a 2.47 ERA in 15 starts, including three complete games. He only surrendered 29 earned runs in 105.2 innings this season while striking out 110 batters.
With their fifth-round pick (152nd overall), the Brewers selected RHP Josh Uhen from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Uhen, an Oshkosh, WI native, made 21 appearances out of the bullpen for the Panthers in his redshirt sophomore season this year. He compiled a 1-0 record with a 3.80 ERA in 21.1 innings with 19 strikeouts.
The Brewers drafted 1B Garrett Cooper out of the University of Auburn with their sixth-round selection (182 overall). The 6’6” first baseman batted a team-leading .354 with seven home runs and 37 RBI this past season. He was named to the Second Team All-SEC squad.
Milwaukee selected CF Omar Garcia from Miami Dade Community College South with their seventh-round selection (212th overall). The speedy outfielder (6.3 in the 60-yard dash) batted .447, stole 32 bases and scored 39 runs for the Sharks, leading them to an overall record of 38-10 and the 2013 Southern Conference title.
With their eighth-round pick (242nd overall), the Brewers selected CF Brandon Diaz from American Heritage (FL) High School. The right-handed batter helped lead the Patriots to a 25-4 record in his senior season. He batted .478 with seven home runs, 22 RBI and 44 runs scored over 28 games.
Milwaukee drafted LHP Tyler Linehan out of Fresno State University with their ninth-round selection (272nd overall). Linehan was 3-7 with a 5.90 ERA in 19 appearances (seven starts) while striking out 28 batters over 50.1 innings in his junior season. The lefty compiled a 11-14 record with a 4.59 ERA over 46 appearances (28 starts) in three seasons for the Bulldogs. He was named the Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week in his sophomore season (February 13-19, 2012) and the WAC Pitcher of the Week, also in his sophomore season (May 7-13, 2012).
The Brewers selected Rice University LF Michael Ratterree with their 10th-round pick (302nd overall), their last selection of Day 2 of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft. Ratterree batted .282 with nine home runs and 41 RBI for the Owls in his senior season. He was chosen as a Freshman All-American in 2010 by Collegiate Baseball, a 2011 Second Team ABCA All-South Region selection and was named to the 2012 Conference USA Academic Honor Roll. In his four years at Rice, he batted .282 with 31 homers, 190 RBI and 193 runs scored in 244 games.
Overall, the Brewers have made 10 selections over the first two days of the draft, which includes seven college players and three high school players. Milwaukee has selected five pitchers (one left-hander and four right-handers), two infielders and three outfielders.
